How to Make a Blog Using Free Domain and Hosting

I’m sure you already know what a blog is, Blog is contraction from Weblog, it is a type of website that maintained usually by personal people with regular basis of content or post. People use blog for some reasons such as express their activities, sharing information or knowledge with others, or even for individual business like introducing a product.

For people that is not familiar with internet, may have a question how to make a blog?. When start learning, it is not so bad for making a blog freely using free domain and free hosting. What is domain? domain is an identification label that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control in the Internet, based on the Domain Name System (DNS). Hosting is internet service where you store data files of your blog, so that your blog can be accessed thru the World Wide Web.

There are many services that offer domain and hosting freely, but at this time I want to use Free Domain Co.cc and Free hosting ByetHost. Let’s begin with Sign Up for free domain Co.cc by going to www.co.cc then click Create Account Now link, or go here. Fill the form for Username and Password and form Account Information like the pictures above. After you complete all fields, check I accept the Terms of Service and press Create an Account Now button. If you entered correct data, your account page will now appear.

Once you succeed creating Co.cc account, you can now create Co.cc name for your domain by pressing Getting a New Domain link. in the Search for available domain names box, enter your free domain name, e.g: justexample then press Check Availability to ensure whether domain name you entered has not been used by other people. If your domain name is available you can continue registration by pressing Continue to Registration button.

Once your domain name successfully registered, you should set up domain by pressing Set up button, or Domain Settings -> Manage Domain -> Select your domain -> Set Up. If you don’t set up registered domain within 48 hours, Co.cc will cancel the registration. In set up domain page there are 3 methods: Name Server, Zone Record, URL Forwarding, this time I will choose Name Server method, later you will enter name server related to your hosting.

The Next step, you should register to free hosting service, Byethost. Fill the blank fields, and ensure you enter valid email address, this will use to activate your account. Check your email, and find activation email in your inbox, click activation link given by Byethost. Account information has been created, save this information, you will need these information to manage your account and setup a blog.

Ok, now you have free domain and free hosting account. To start making a blog you should login to your Control panel, url listed. Enter your username and password. Your control panel page appear now, start by setting up domain first. In Domain menu, click Addon Domains, enter your free domain you have created in Co.cc, in my example I created justexample.co.cc then press Add Domain button. You should back to your Co.cc account to setup Name Server. In the picture below Byethost has 5 name server, enter these name server when setup domain, you should add 3 more name server, press Setup button after entering all 5 name server of Byethost.

We almost finish creating a blog, now you will install software for blog. In Software & Services, click i-Vista Easy Script Installation link. Select your destination in drop-down menu, then press Proceed button. In the next step you should select software, Byethost serves several software such as Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, Zen Cart, etc. At this time you select wordpress 2.8 as your software, press Install Now button.

when selecting path, leave the field blank because we plan to install in root directory of justmyexample.co.cc, then press Complete Install button. Congratulation, you just successful created a blog with url justmyexample.co.cc, this is type non-www, if you want to change this blog become www.justmyexample.co.cc, simply go to admin page and change your blog url in setting page.

Blogwalking to Increase Alexa Rank via Shoutmix Chat

Blogwalking is an activity of blogger to surf from one blog to the other blog, read its content, give comment, ask for link exchange or just leave comment in shout box. Blogwalking is very useful to promote our blog, increase Alexa rank and the most important is to make friendship among bloggers.

Some people blogwalking just leave message in shoutbox in hoping the owner visit back to their blog, maybe like me, this is the easiest way instead giving comment on post because we should read the article first, but when we read any article we get something useful and add our knowledge.

There are some service that offer us free chat box or shout box such as Cbox, Shoutmix, Meebome, Oggix, Sbox, and others. The most famous shoutbox or chat box I know is Shoutmix. During blogwalking I found many shoutmix chat widget than other services. As I know that shoutmix is very simple, easy but very interesting. We can customize our chat widget so looks different than others.

To get your shoutmix chat widget just go to official shoutmix website and follow the instruction there. I have owned shoutmix chat widget two months ago. Everyday I blogwalking in order to promote and increase my Alexa rank. My Alexa rank reduce significantly about two months from over #2,509,787 to #105,899, I’m very happy with it.

But after one month since I owned shoutmix chat widget, I had a problem, my shoutmix chat widget couldn’t be loaded in my browser, I was very panic with this, then I tried to find out why this happenned?, finally I got the answer, that my IP address was supposed as post spammer, so shoutmix blocked/banned my IP address.

Why did shoutmix suppose that our IP address as post spammer?. Shoutmix will suppose us as spammer if you post very often in other shoutmix chat with the same post or you use program auto blogwalking or crawler to post messages. Auto blogwalking or crawler will start posting a message with initial shoutmix chat url widget, like mine is http://www4.shoutmix.com/?hasanchat then go to other link blog who has posted in that widget to find other shoutmix url.

I was very sad when my IP address get banned/blocked, my browser couldn’t load shoutmix chat widget even worst my blog url also blocked, so I couldn’t leave or post message in other blogs. Eventually, to avoid using my IP address I tried blogwalking with IP proxy and of course it worked, I could load again shoutmix chat widget, you can get IP proxy from http://aliveproxy.com/, find Anonymous proxy, then set your browser with this proxy.

The last problem one, I still couldn’t leave/post message in other shoutmix chat widget with my blog url, so I tried to find out url redirection like tiny url or short url service but sometime with these url redirection we still cannot post. Finally I tried to make my old blog irfannafiskid.co.cc which hosted in byethost to redirect to this blog with this code in header tag.

I’m very happy because a few days ago I could access shoutmix chat widget without proxy, also I could post with this blog again without url redirection. Thanks to shoutmix who has brough my account back on track.

Adding Facebook Status to Your Blog

Facebook is one of very popular social networking (micro blogging), most people who know about internet mostly have facebook account. Facebook connect you with your friend around the world, you can easily check what they are doing by looking their status.

Adding facebook status to a blog is very simple and I think many blogger know it. I just wanna share to everyone, so you can also put your status to your blog, it is very useful to make a friendship. People who like you will add you as their friend.

There are many ways in order to place your facebook status to your blog, some plugins (for wordpress) have already made by plugin maker and ready to use, but now I just use code that given by facebook itself.

To add your facebook status to your blog, you must login first to your facebook account. Find out Create a Profile Badge in your Profile page, at bottom left side then click this link, Facebook Badges page will appear now.

On Facebook badges page you can create or edit badge. You can edit the layout and items for your badge by clicking Edit This Badge link. Choose option layout, there are 3 options: Vertical, Horizontal and 2-cols then select items you want to show on your badge. If you feel satisfied with your badge, click Save button. You will be brought back to Facebook badges page. Copy html code to your blog. You must delete some code in order to make badge image appear in your blog. Find out code like below in img tag:

Every account has different number of png image, delete badge code, and now the code like below:

After you place the badge code in your widget, check your blog now, try to adjust width and height of image to fit with your space you have.

Making Your Long URL Become Tiny and Simple

I have experience when I posted a thread in a forum that I should type very long URL, although eventually I just copy and paste it. Obviously, having a long URL sometimes make you inconvenience, when you writing an email, or when you should post that have word count limited, making your URL shorter is better choice.

There are many services that offer you shorten URL, but right now, I just explain mostly with TinyURL service. Basically, TinyUrl is a URL forwarding service, or people well known as URL Cloaking, URL Masking, that mean the techniques on the World Wide Web for making a web page available under many URLs.

To get your shorten or tiny URL, simply go to TinyURL, then fill the blank field with your long URL, example: http://www.hasannudin.com/tips-and-tricks/using-seo-friendly-urls-for-better-search-results/, then press Make TinyURL!, a tinyURL will be created for you.

We can see that original URL has a length of 92 characters and resulted in the following TinyURL which has a length of 25 characters.

If you have many file in your category, you can also make it smaller just add slash and filename. For example: you have category google and seo tips like this URL http://www.hasannudin.com/google-and-seo-tips, by entering to tinyURL you get this URL http://tinyurl.com/mtxhhk. So if you have file under this category, you just add slash and filename. http://www.hasannudin.com/google-and-seo-tips/myfile.php, you can use http://tinyurl.com/mtxhhk/myfile.php

Generally most people sometimes not respect when they know that the URL has affiliate code, Hiding your affilate URL can also be done with this service. Your visitors will not realize that the URL has affiliate code.

Warning: Don’t use this service for spamming or any ilegal purpose that will make TinyURL get disabled.

Another services that work as well as TinyURL are lo.ly, bit.ly, is.gd, tiny.cc, doiop, w3t, alturl, blog-w, and many others or you can find by yourself via google search engine with keyword tiny url or shorten url.

Dynamic URL vs. SEO Friendly URL

By default, Wordpress names its URL with a dynamically generated sequential number. The number is placed after the domain name and looks something like http://www.hasannudin.com/?p=158. To Google, this doesn’t mean anything. Google will have to spider my content to figure out what the article is about. Contrast this with http://www.hasannudin.com/tips-and-tricks/making-indonesian-fake-earning/. With this SEO friendly URL, Google can figure out immediately what the article is about. I have a much better chance of showing up in the search engine results page using a SEO friendly URL than a dynamic one.

Turning On SEO Friendly URL

To turn on SEO friendly URL, go to Options setting in your Wordpress control panel and choose Permalinks. From there you have four choices for displaying your URL: Default, Date and name based, Numeric, and Custom. You will want to use Date and name based or custom because they are the most search engine friendly. I use the custom setting for my URLs – it shows my domain name followed by the post name. The custom structure to do it this is /%category%/%postname%/ or /%postname%/ if you want to omit its category tips-and-tricks.
